Yes, it has a lot of helpful inside information about the Camino. Yes, it draws a great picture of the experience. Yes, it has some historical background of the history you'll be strolling by. But for me, it spoke more to the emotional/spiritual journey.I'm a middle aged man facing a lot of the same struggles: fatigue, winds, rain, inclines, descents, declines, addiction, inability to enjoy the now, little time to take a breath, engage, get to know people. I feel like I've got my compass back. I swore I wouldn't ever purchase another book on the camino as I had walked mine last October, 29 days SJPP to Santiago; and came away thinking I had spent entirely too much time and money on camino books that were fairy-tales, written by people who must live in their head and,,,,; or put way too much emphasis on what to bring,,,,. However, I read Koontz's reviews and gave it a go. I couldn't put it down for 2 nights as it captured what felt real and not over the top with some out of body experiences. What spoke to me was he could succinctly paint a picture with words, put you right into his place or at least something close in your life it related to. There wasn't alot of fluff with regards to the camino history, but he kept to his experiences of each of his days' travels and what that day reflected back to him with regards to his life. I could completely relate to having felt called to walk the camino without need to verbally coin why; others I related to, an awareness of "an inner faith that no matter what happened on this journey, everything would be just fine." His assessing of a relationship back home - definitely made one assess friendships, family, whether they were worth continuing with or not. And the simplicity and time and distance away from one's "life back home" lent itself to more objective contemplation and clarity - with each of his day's travels there was an awareness (or lesson) that myself as a reader could relate to, he just said it better and brought to light alot of what I had felt, just hadn't processed to the front of my awareness as of yet. I'm glad I read his book; it helped alot with the return home process - his observations the same. Curious to know now what else he has written.
