Ebook About Zine queen Ayun Halliday confesses the best-and worst-of her globetrotting misadventures. "I laughed hard on nearly every page of this shockingly intimate memoir and deeply funny book." -- Stephen Colbert Ayun Halliday may not make for the most sensible travel companion, but she is certainly one of the zaniest, with a knack for inserting herself (and her unwitting cohorts) into bizarre situations around the globe. Curator of kitsch and unabashed aficionada of pop culture, Halliday offers bemused, self-deprecating narration of events from guerrilla theater in Romania to drug-induced Apocalypse Now reenactments in Vietnam to a perhaps more surreal collagen-implant demonstration at a Paris fashion show emceed by Lauren Bacall. On layover in Amsterdam, Halliday finds unlikely trouble in the red-light district -- eliciting the ire of a tiny, violent madam, and is forced to explain tampons to soldiers in Kashmir -- "they're for ladies. Bleeding ladies" -- that, she admits, "might have looked like white cotton bullets lined up in their box." A self-admittedly bumbling vacationer, Halliday shares -- with razor-sharp wit and to hilarious effect -- the travel stories most are too self-conscious to tell. Includes line drawings, generously provided by the author.Book No Touch Monkey!: And Other Travel Lessons Learned Too Late (Adventura Books Series) Review :
Ayun Halliday loves to whine. She whines about the miseries of travelling (poor me), her mistakes made travelling (silly me), her funny foibles when travelling (aren't I cute), and all about me, me, me. What she doesn't write about is the countries she visited, except to show how miserable she was. About visiting the gorillas in Rwanda, she writes "They behaved just as they did in Gorillas In The Mist, so I tried to act like Sigourney Weaver." That is all she has to say about the gorillas. More important are the bugs in the popcorn she buys. I appreciate a funny travel story, and in fact, that's why I bought this book...but I like it in the context of some appreciation for the places, cultures, and people of the places the writer is visiting. This has none of that. As a result, the funny stories stop being funny very quickly, and become self-indulgent. The cover is the best part of the book. I bought the book because one reviewer said he laughed on every page, but he must be easily amused, because I never laughed once. The author relates how she got dysentery, malaria and a dislocated knee while traveling, and how she was frightened by dogs, monkeys and prostitutes. Good travel writers can transform misfortune into interesting stories because of affection for the countries and people visited, or at least a good eye for detail. Ten minutes after reading the book, I couldn't remember any of the countries the author traveled through or any of the people she met except for one monk who liked to swim. The people she described most were her disfunctional boyfriends. The last chapter is typical, where she relates her non-adventure of staying in the hotel room with the baby while everybody else goes out and has fun. The only reason I read the whole book was because I had a back spasm and I was too uncomfortable to get up and get another book. Now I wish I had just thrown it against the wall and taken a nap instead.
